Description
Under the supervision of an experienced preceptor, the student will apply evidence-based practice to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of infants, children and adolescents in a variety of pediatric health care settings. Emphasis is placed on content knowledge acquired in the co-requisite didactic course and expanding clinical decision-making skills.
Course competencies
At the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Provide child-centered primary health care including health promotion, disease prevention, health protection, anticipatory guidance, counseling, disease management, and palliative care.
- Utilize advanced health assessment skills to differentiate between normal, variations of normal, and abnormal findings.
- Combine assessment data with screening/diagnostic tests to diagnose common pediatric diseases and disorders with preceptor collaboration.
- Execute an evidence-based plan of care including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapeutics with consideration of cost, risks, benefits, and child/family preferences to protect health and manage common pediatric diseases and disorders with preceptor collaboration.
- Demonstrate core professional values of the pediatric nurse practitioner role including ethical decisions, confidentiality, education, mutual trust, and respect for the patient and the inter-professional health care team.
- Communicate effectively with concise case presentations to preceptor and accurate, thorough documentation in the electronic health record.
Students complete 225 clock hours of supervised clinical experience during the fall semester. Students will implement direct and indirect role components of a pediatric nurse practitioner.

- Utilize advanced health assessment skills to differentiate between normal, variations of normal, and abnormal findings.
- Analyze assessment data with screening/diagnostic tests to diagnose common, acute, chronic, and complex pediatric diseases, disorders and injuries with preceptor collaboration.
- Execute an evidence-based plan of care including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapeutics with consideration of cost, risks, benefits, and child/family preferences to protect health and manage common, acute, chronic, and complex pediatric diseases, disorders and injuries with preceptor collaboration.
- Demonstrate core professional values of the pediatric nurse practitioner role including ethical decisions, confidentiality, education, mutual trust, and respect for the patient and the inter-professional health care team.
- Communicate effectively with concise patient presentations to preceptor and accurate, thorough documentation in the electronic health record.
- Facilitate peer to peer learning with discussion and case presentation.
Students complete 300 clock hours of supervised clinical experience during the spring semester. Students will write a self-evaluation regarding their (a) clinical progress; and (b) seminar participation and presentation.
