Description
This course focuses on developing the leadership role at the microsystem level with aggregate populations in complex and dynamic work environments. Students will assess the application of leadership theories, evidence-based leadership practices, and organizational dynamics as they apply to the nurse leader role.
Course competencies
At the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyze the influence of current nursing/health issues on the role of the nurse leader.
- Appraise the attributes and functions of organizational structure, culture, and work environments of healthcare systems.
- Evaluate leadership theories and evidence used by nurse leaders in healthcare systems.
Students complete 150 clock hours of supervised clinical experience during the fall semester.

Description
This course focuses on developing the nurse leader role at the mesosystem (multidepartmental) level by expanding the focus on strategic and daily operations of multiple nursing and health services departments. Students will examine decision-making, teamwork, conflict resolution, problem-solving, coaching, and work engagement experiences with individuals and teams in health systems.

At the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyze the link between strategic and daily operations in a complex health system.
- Effectively collaborate with key stakeholders to create lasting connections that facilitate health system outcomes.
- Compare conflict resolution and coaching strategies used by nurse leaders in the practice environment.
- Evaluate the influence of a talent development program on employee engagement.
Students complete 150 clock hours of supervised clinical experience during the spring semester.
This is a 3-credit clinical course.
Description
This final practicum course focuses on synthesis of the nurse leader role, including accountabilities for safe and effective care delivery. Emphasis is placed on extended responsibilities of nurse leaders, such as partnerships, service-based approaches, continuum-defined healthcare systems, self-managed teams, health innovations, and values-based care. Through a guided learning opportunity, students will participate in and assess complex structures and processes designed to create value in health systems.

At the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Synthesize the various components of the nursing leadership role.
- Analyze innovative strategies for promoting values-based care.
- Demonstrate competence in communication, collaboration, and consultation skills required to advance interprofessional teams, partnerships, and complex care delivery systems.
- Evaluate nursing leadership accountabilities for safe, high quality services
Students complete 225 clock hours of supervised clinical experience during the summer semester.
