Description
The family nurse practitioner (FNP) student will apply critical thinking skills to assess, diagnose, and develop plans of care for patients across the lifespan in a primary care setting, under the direct supervision of an approved licensed healthcare provider. This course will apply content taught in FNP I didactic course.
Course competencies
At the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Obtain and accurately document comprehensive and problem-focused health histories and physical examinations for patients across the lifespan.
- Assess, diagnose, and formulate a treatment plan with preceptor input for the management of health and illness that might also include prescribing medications within the NP scope of practice.
- Develop beginning decision-making skills using evidence from a variety of sources.
- Consult with other professionals and refer appropriately.
- Apply motivational interviewing techniques to effect desired change in behavior across the lifespan.
- Work on interprofessional teams to provide patient centered care.
Clinical competencies
Students complete 225 clock hours of supervised clinical experience during the fall semester.

This course will apply content learned in FNP II didactic course.

At the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply motivational interviewing techniques to effect desired change in behavior across the lifespan.
- Obtain and accurately document comprehensive and problem-focused health histories and physical examinations for patients across the lifespan.
- Assess, diagnose, and formulate a treatment plan independently with little input from preceptor, for the management of health and illness, which includes prescribing medications within the NP scope of practice.
- Demonstrate effective decision-making ability using evidence from a variety of sources.
- Consult with other professionals and refer appropriately.
- Collaborate with others in an interprofessional team to provide patient-centered care.
Clinical competencies
Students complete 225 clock hours of supervised clinical experience during the spring semester.
This is a 3-credit course with 1-credit hour dedicated to didactic learning and 2-credit hours (150 clinical hours) in a primary care setting under the direct supervision of a healthcare provider.
Description
This terminal practicum for family nurse practitioners focuses on synthesis and application of knowledge and skills for autonomous practice across the lifespan. Students complete clinical experiences under supervision of a community-based primary care provider preceptor.

- Assess, diagnose, and formulate a treatment plan for the management of health and illness including prescribing medications and treatments within the NP scope of practice.
- Use evidence to support clinical judgment and diagnostic reasoning.
- Consult with other professionals including referral to other providers as needed for comprehensive care.
- Use motivational interviewing to enable patients and families to effect desired changes in health-related behavior.
- Evaluate the impact of healthcare delivery on patients, families, and other stakeholders.
- Evaluate clinical and fiscal outcomes of care.
- Plan for resolution of ethical conflicts in the provision of primary care across the lifespan.
- Demonstrate ability to practice within the legal and regulatory definition of a family nurse practitioner.
- Examine best practices for establishing a legal entity for becoming a healthcare provider/family nurse practitioner.
- Conduct self in a professional manner at all times in the clinical setting and with patients, families, other providers and ancillary personnel.

Students complete 150 clock hours of supervised clinical experience.
