CNS online preceptor training

Thank you for volunteering (or considering to volunteer) to precept an IUSON CNS student. As part of our orientation process for new CNS preceptors, we provide a free online continuing education training course specific to precepting CNS students in the clinical setting. This online self-paced training takes about four hours in total to complete and can be done in one or several sittings. After you complete the training and the evaluation, you will receive a certificate for 4.0 ANCC accredited contact hours in continuing nursing education.

To access Canvas, the IU learning management system, where the online CNS preceptor course is housed, you must have either an active IU username and passphrase or create an IU Guest Account.

Please complete the online course and the evaluation as soon as possible to be prepared for the semester. Thank you!

Do you already have an IU login?

If you already have an Indiana University username or an active IU Guest Account, please send it to cenurse@iu.edu with your name and “CNS preceptor through IUSON” and we can add you to the course that way.

Create a guest account

To create an IU Guest Account for course access.

Use your web browser and go to the Canvas homepage. Below the login button on the line reading "Need an IU Guest account?," access the link labeled, "Create one now."
Complete all required fields, using your preferred email address, which will serve as your user name.
After creating a passphrase (be sure to read the guidelines on the side of the screen) and submitting the form, login to your email account. Locate the message in your inbox (if you don't see it after a few minutes, check your spam folder) from the Indiana University technology system. Follow the link to activate the guest account.
The web browser (or a new browser window) will open. On the Activate your IU Guest Account page, enter your username (your complete email address including the @ information) and enter the confirmation code provided in the activation email message. Click Activate Account.

If you do not receive this activation email, please contact the UITS Support Center at 317-274-4357.

Important step. Do not skip!

Once you have activated your guest account through the IU technology website, you ALSO need to activate it in the Canvas system.

Use your web browser and go to the Canvas home page.
Log into Canvas with your new IU Guest account username (your complete email address) and the passphrase you chose when you created your IU Guest account. This allows Canvas to recognize your account. NOTE: We cannot add you to the course site until this step is completed.
You will not see any courses listed in Canvas yet.
Finally, send an email to cenurse@iu.edu; include the following information:
- Name
- Email (the same email you used to create the IU Guest account)
- Course: CNS Preceptor through IUSON
We will add you to the course site after we receive this information.
You will receive an email notification from Canvas letting you know when you have been added to the course.
